YOUTH

TRAIL CORPS

Our YTC program continues to grow. We have some great Trail Build Leaders that are not only good trail builders, but are also great role models working with middle school and high school aged kids. This year YTC took on a couple of trails including Irish Death, Atomic Dog, and Radical Dragon. The kids are learning great trail building skills, doing lots of bike riding and also learning about Environmental Sustainability.

BUILDING COMMUNITY THROUGH ACCESS TO ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

Youth explore trail building as an integral component of their mountain bike passion.

YTC is all about Middle and High school youth focusing on:

  • Trail science

  • The art of building and maintaining a good trail

  • Environmental sustainability

  • Spending quality time outdoors

  • Safe tool use and management

  • Learning about trail building standards

  • Forestry

  • Teamwork

  • Self-reliance

  • Service learning

YTC seeks to provide fun, achievable projects. The groups work on many different trails and issues that the Trail Build Leaders and YTC youth come up with together. YTC works with new and seasoned YTC kids. We ask that your youth is comfortable riding most of the trails on Galbraith.

Each day begins with meeting at Samish Parking Lot at 9:45 AM, gathering as a group and departing at 10:00 AM, riding your bikes up to base camp for the day, dropping off lunch and any extra possessions. Trail builders and youth will discuss the project designated for the day and get to work; stopping for snacks, water breaks, lunch, and discussions. What is left of the day will be hitting the trails for some fun riding with our amazing Trail Builders. We will wrap up the day at the Samish Parking Lot at 4:00 to meet parents for pick up.

Each participant will need to bring a bike, lunch, and snacks* for the day as well as water, helmet, and appropriate layers for seasonable weather. Kids will experience being outside all day working with youth crews and Trail Crew Leaders and learning some educational components of Trail Building. *Pack plenty of food to fuel this active day!

Weather can cancel the day; please understand the safety of our participants is our first priority and we will cancel/reschedule in case of any weather deemed unsafe. Also know that we follow Bellingham Public Schools and CDC guidelines.
